So in honor of National Pie Day we are making homemade pizza PIES for dinner! What else would a good Italian girl make on National Pie Day?
My household has been a bit under the weather so some of the ingredients are “half baked”. Now my Dad coined that phrase after a certain pretty blond woman from The Food Network. I bought frozen whole wheat pizza dough and a grocery store rotisserie chicken. I made tomato sauce for dinner last night, and there was quite a bit left over. I always make enough tomato sauce for at least two meals. We also had garlic, green pepper, sun dried tomatoes and half a ball of fresh mozzarella cheese in the fridge.
The husband rolled out the dough onto a pizza pan. He then aerated the dough with a fork. I saw this little trick on a cooking show, and it really does make a difference. The crust turns out lighter and fluffier. It also helps to make it a little crispy which is the way that I really like it.
He then drizzled the dough with olive oil, and then sprinkled it with garlic salt. Hattie helped add the toppings, and she also helped herself to several pieces of cheese. The second pizza we used tomato sauce instead of the olive oil.
Hattie and the Husband carefully put the pizza pies into the oven.
They cooked for about 15 minutes. They came out crispy and delish! I should have drizzled a little bit of olive oil on the sun dried tomatoes because they got a little too crispy.
Happy Pie Day!
